(An) orexigenic hypothalamic neuropeptides are differentially expressed in high and low feed efficient quail lines

چکیده
The livestock and poultry industry is facing numerous challenges to keep up with the increasing demand for high quality animal protein due to the continuously increasing global human population, severe drought conditions around the world, and grains being used for ethanol production. Since feed costs are the majority of the total cost required to produce a live bird, feed efficiency (FE) is a trait of importance. It is beneficial to develop a more deep molecular understanding of the mechanisms that determine feed efficiency. Recently, this study used Japanese quail that were divergently selected for high and low feed efficiency as a model to determine the differential expression of several feeding-related hypothalamic neuropeptides.

Decades of divergent selection for 4-wk BW has produced 3 lines of growth-selected Japanese quail. P line quail have been selected for >110 generations for 4-wk posthatch BW and are nearly 3-fold larger than the randomly bred control C line. The H line has been selected for high 4-wk BW for 52 generations and the L line has been selected for low 4-wk BW for 54 generations. To identify different...

Hypothalamic glucosensing, which involves the detection of glucose concentration changes by brain cells and subsequent release of orexigenic or anorexigenic neuropeptides, is a crucial process that regulates feeding behavior. Arcuate nucleus (AN) neurons are classically thought to be responsible for hypothalamic glucosensing through a direct sensing mechanism; however, recent data has shown a m...

Recent data suggest that ghrelin exerts its orexigenic action through regulation of hypothalamic AMP-activated protein kinase pathway, leading to a decline in malonyl-CoA levels and desinhibition of carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1A (CPT1A), which increases mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation and ultimately enhances the expression of the orexigenic neuropeptides agouti-related protein (AgRP) and...
